Working ranch with old water tower, barns, out buildings.
beautiful treelined creek setting and meadow. Tale 85 west to DeAnza
Blvd.. go right to McClellan Rd.Take a left and go 2 miles till you see
golf course on left. Take a right here into park.

MONDAY 15th/22 DECEMBER LOS ALAMITOS CREEK ALMEDEN VALLEY 9am/12noon
Another location on this creek with open view of mountains and tree
lined creek and fall colors. Go south on Almeden Blvd. Just before it
ends you will see parking on left right before bridge.

MONDAY DECEMBER 29th COYOTE VALLEY off Palm Ave, Just South of San Jose
Hay fields with tree studded hills in the distant, barns and ranches
nearby. Take 85 to 101 and 101 to Bailey Right on Bailey to
Santa Teresa Blvd. go left to Palm Ave. Go right and left on Palm Ct,

adobe, victorian house and lots of barns and out buildings plus great
surrounding coastal landscape. Take Hwy 1 towards Davenport a couple of
Miles out of Santa Cruz and the Park entrance will be on Left. The

miles above Anderson Lake 9am/1pm

Sam Pearson is arranging for his Ranger friend to open the gates at
8;30 am Grand Vistas back toward the lake with A Historical House and
Barns to paint and California Hills all around. On 101 South go east on
Dunne Rd. towards Coe State Park , cross over Anderson bridge, go 2
miles to Jackson Ranch on left which is on a hair-pin turn and signed.
Our SIGN will be displayed Ask Sam about his jogging encounter! Allow
45 min to hour for arrival.

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22TH VILLA MONTALVO, SARATOGA 9am/12noon
Once grand estate of Senator Phalen, Villa Montalvo offers a lovely
Mansion surrounded by formal gardens. quite and peaceful Take Montalvo
Road off Saratoga Los Gatos Road and follow it around to the end. Meet
in parking lot #3 to left of Mansion.

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 29TH CORNER OF COLLEGE AVE, AND EAST MAIN Los

The Old Soda Works Building, outdoor cafes with lot of color and

. Sam and Addie each have separate charming studios on a property with 2
huge oak trees shading a beautiful Ranch Style home. Lovely landscape abound. No big vistas here but many charming vignettes to paint or set up a still life. From Los Gatos take Los Gatos Blvd to Los Gatos

Monday July 7th LOS GATOS HIGH SCHOOL LOS GATOS 9am/12noon. In 1923 this 1908 High School was renovated to its present appearance. Meet on the front lawn. Main street, Los Gatos. Besides the obvious, The sports field behind the high school and the victorians across the street and Forbe's Mill nearby give us lots of variety,

This park is nestled in an older part of Los Gatos with beautiful older homes on the surrounding streets.
Take Bachman Ave. West off Santa Cruz Blvd. and turn left on Belmont.

MONDAY JULY 21st and 28th HISTORICAL DOWNTOWN LOS GATOS 9am/12noon
Paint Historical downtown Los Gatos. Meet in The Park on the Plaza at Main and Santa Cruz Ave.

MONDAY JUNE 9th HELLER PARK (correction) My instruction said to go West on Capitol expressway and should have read East to Senter Rd. also there is a county park fee of $6 Lets go in on the West side of the lake for a change of scenery

MONDAY JUNE, 16th/23th DAVENPORT CALIF. 9.5 Miles North of Santa Cruz 9am till------
Some us us didn't get enough of this site which offers industrial (cement Plant) Coastal cliffs/Ocean and monterey pines, small but historical and weathered downtown and coffee house and restaurants for after a fun day of painting. Take Hwy 1 north from Santa Cruz to Davenport. Lets meet in the coffee house parking lot till we get our bearings.If you get there a little late go thru town and meet on the left near the railway signal across from the cement plant.

MONDAY JUNE 30th COYOTE CREEK TRAIL off Monterey Rd. South of San Jose This recent site is part of the Southern Coyote Creek Trail systems. It offer lake and creek settings plus views of the hills on both side of the valley. This is also home to the Santa Clara County Model Aircraft Skypark Take 85 to 101 to Bailey and left on Monterey Rd. Barnhart Ave is the rd. Between the huge electrical towers and as you travel south, on Monterey, you will need to make a u-turn back to Electrical towers turn right and follow the road around towards the Airport parking lot.

(NOTE) Elke Groves has ask me to head up the hanging and Rotating of Plein air art in the History Museum of Los Gatos. As it would seem appropriate to do Los Gatos Historical and landscape scenes I will be scheduling July and August in and about The Town of Los Gatos,---- David and Sam I would like to include your respective Studio/property in this period If your open please get back to me with a Monday (july/august) that works for you. I told Elke we would be ready to hang by Sept.1st If one of you will help me out with this project, I would appreciate it, Nick

Elke's Proposal to sell Plein Air Paintings at History Museum

Equipment
Need display stand, guessing wire stand 6' tall with 4 sides to allow hanging of work, tag with name of artist and price to be attached to wire at back. Display stand from catalogues $60-70. For display purposes need small business card basket for each work, with price on card. ($1/basket)

Terms for artwork
Work should be small (8x10,11 x 14). Framed/unframed? But ready to hang.
Work will be marked with received date and be kept on view for 2 months, and if not sold, it will be returned to supplier/artist.
Price will include sales tax, and Museum will collect 30% commission. Upon sale, artist will receive 70% of retail price (after sales tax removed.) The artist is a wholesaler; the Museum will pay sales tax at year end. The Museum will also provide the name and contact information of the purchaser.

Quite Mountain Setting with Monet-like pond, old farm equipment, barn and lots of redwoods. A personal favorite, Take Hwy17 South to Summit Road. Go East on Summit Rd. and go left on Trail Ridge Road (about 1 mile from Hwy17 Ä…look for rack of mailboxes on left and club sign). Take Trail Ridge about 1/4 of a mile and look for parking lot in redwood grove on right. Orange cone will mark the parking area.

MONDAY MAY 19th and 26th DAVENPORT CALIF.

MONDAY, APRIL 7th and 14th ALUM ROCK PARK San Jose 9am/12noon
125 year old park with creek, stone bridges with old trees and nice
landscape. Take Penitencia Creek Road off Capitol Expressway. Go east
into park and park near the ranger station. Bring a lunch and enjoy the
park. possible fee


MONDAY APRIL 21st and 28th MISSION SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – 9am to Lunch

Our return visit to this Historical Mission Town. 19th century
buildings, Mission and Grounds to paint. Take 101 south ,well past
Gilroy to Highway 156. Go South 3 miles to the Mission San Juan
Bautista Turn 0ff. Follow to end and go right to Plaza Green in front
of Mission, Allow 1 hour for Travel.

The back of harbor has a variety of boats some in drydock with lots of contrasting colors do to the trees lining the hills on both sides of inlet.We will meet here but Twin Lakes State Beach is nearby for landscape only artist. Good eating places as well.From Santa Cruz
go South on Hwy 1 to Soquel Ave once on Soquel Go left and a quick
left on 7th. St. Follow 7th. down to Brommer go right and when you get
to the Harbor take left to first available parking lot.


December 2007

MONDAY, DECEMBER 24th AND 31st
SANTA TERESA PARK, SOUTH SAN JOSE

For those available during the holidays we will paint this quiet hilltop Park with Mt. Ranges on two sides of valley and winter Calif. Hills. Take 85 east to Bernal Rd. Go West and near top of hill take first left into the park. Proceed to Pueblo Group Picnic Area. FEE without pass.


November 2007

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5th and 12th
COYOTE VALLEY South San Jose
Farm and Ranch land and tree studded California hills. We will meet on the corner of Palm Ave. and Palm Ct. off Santa Teresa Blvd. All the neighboring roads provide good vistas to paint.Go East on 85 to 101, South to Bailey and right to Santa Teresa Blvd. Take a left to Palm Ave. go right to Palm Ct.

ALAMITOS CREEK ALMEDEN VALLEY

Treelined Creek, California hills, fall color; Take 85 east to Almeden Expressway, go south, past Lake to Windfield Blvd. Go left to Cross Springs Drive, Go right to Mazzone and park in neighborhood. Good painting sights and space on Bridge.

OCTOBER 8 ED LEVIN COUNTY PARK East of Milpitas
Two lake settings, one with willow trees hanging into the lake. Lots of distant Calif Hills and live stock
nearby. Fee Take 680 North to Calaveras Road. Go East up hill past Downing Rd, to Park
entrance on the right. meet in parking lot by lake.

OCTOBER 15 UNIVERSITY AVE Rose Garden area, San Jose
Grand homes of every description with many just as charming homes on nearby streets, plus Rose
Garden if you choose. Meet at small triangular park at the corner of Dana and University Ave.

OCTOBER 29 ELKHORN SLOUGH South of Watsonville
Beautiful waterways looking back towards the west. Lots of color. Take Hiway 1 to
Watsonville. Go East on Riverside Drive to St. Porter Dr. take a right. It will become
G12 or Salinas Rd. When Salinas Road curves back towards hiway 1 you will go left
on Elkhorn Road. Follow past Kirby Park till you come to a parking lot on right. we will
paint there.

SEPTEMBER 3 JOSEPH D. GRANT COUNTY PARK. 15 miles East of Downtown San Jose
Oak studded California hills, lake, with plenty of open space and on the way to Lick Observatory.
Take 680 north and go east on Alum Rock to Mt. Hamilton Road Go Right 8 miles to park entrance
on the right. Meet in parking lot nearest the entrance. Labor day so bring a lunch and enjoy. fee

SEPTEMBER 10 MISSION SAN JOSE 680/MISSION BLVD. South Fremont
Restored Mission, originally finished in 1806. lots of palms and greenery surrounding structures.

AUGUST 6 GLENRIDGE AVE, LOS GATOS

AUGUST 13 and Tuesday the 14th POINT LOBOS 9am on… (special overnight trip)
Famous South-of-Carmel coastal setting with lots of beautiful sites to paint. We will be spending the night nearby. Park fee is $8-9. Enjoy the galleries and good food; even for the day it’s worth the trip.

JULY 2 NO PAINTING - ENJOY THE HOLIDAY!

JULY 9 LIGHT HOUSE STATE BEACH, SANTA CRUZ.

JULY 16 TWIN LAKES BEACH, SANTA CRUZ.
Popular beach with nearby lagoon and boat harbor. Take 17 to highway 1 and head South. Take Soquel Ave off ramp to right, go a short distance and turn left on 7th Ave. Take 7th Ave. to beach, go left and park across from Lagoon. The Crow’s Nest at the Harbor entrance is a great place for views (and a good lunch).

JULY 23 CAPITOLA BEACH.
Charming coastal Village with train tressle/bridges/wharf and interesting buildings. Take 17 South to Highway 1, go South to Capitola's Bay Ave. Exit and follow on down to beach. Park on Esplande in front of beach. $1 an hour parking applies (Bring Quarters). There are eating places all around, so why not bring a friend?

JULY 30 HOME OF PATTI HUGHES 23107 SUMMIT RD.

JUNE 4   RAY'S RANCH, LOS GATOS.
Nearby ranch, old time barn with corrals and possibly cooperative horses. A popular site. Take Shannon Rd. East off Los Gatos Blvd. to top of the hill. Parking is on the left. Keep horse trails clear per the neighbor’s request.

JUNE II MOSS LANDING HARBOR. Highway 1. 9am on
Working fishing harbor, old and new boats and interesting old buildings. Good eating places so bring a friend and make a day of it. Take 17 south to Watsonville exit. Go South past Watsonville and turn right at power plant onto Moss Landing Rd. Take the next right on Sandholdt Rd. Before bridge turn right into Moss Landing Harbor Parking lot. . Great place to get up close and personal with fishing boats and nearby Elkhork Slough.

JUNE 18th BEAUTIFUL, HILLTOP. HOME of FLORIAN and LORI BARTH 9am to 1pm
We painted their unspoiled,South of Hollister, Ranch and now a chance to paint at their spectacular hilltop home. Canyon views of the city, sweeping oak forested mountain rising up ,unspoiled, towards the sky. Sculpture gardens, and a home of architectural grace and rustic elegance..Great interior and exterior views. Be early to park and view the home and pick your site. From Los Gatos go east on Blossom Hill Rd to Camden Ave. Go right to Hicks Road. take a right and go 1 mile and just past Arnerich Rd. you will go right to 18001 Wagner Rd. Follow drive way to top of hill.

May 14   Chaparral Valley Ranch (private) South of Hollister
Los Gatan Florian Barth saw us painting at Ray’s Ranch and invited all to paint at his ranch –lunch included! Meadows and hills, old ranch house, outbuildings and lots of cows. Take 101 through Gilroy and near where the lanes go from 6 to 4, take Hwy 25 off ramp to Hollister (about 23 miles.) Go through Hollister on Hwy 25, through the little town of Tres Pinos. Continue past the San Benito County Fairgrounds. Keep on Hwy 25 and a mile past Panoche Rd., turn left onto Cienega Rd. Go ½ mile past the ‘Thousand Trails’ entrance. April 2, Ray’s Ranch, Los Gatos.
Nearby ranch with turn-of-the-century barns, corrals and horses. From Los Gatos Boulevard travel east on Shannon Road. Continue on Shannon Road to top of hill. Ray’s Ranch is on the left.

April 9 - 10, Over-Night Monday and Tuesday. Pinnacles National Monument, West Entrance near Soledad on Hwy 101, South of Salinas.
The spectacular remains of an ancient volcano. this is a great site for painters, hikers and photographers! The ‘bad guys’ used this rugged area in the late 1800s as a hide-out. Numerous views for painting, just from the parking lot. Weather permitting, I will be leaving at 7:00 am, Monday, April 9. I make a stop at the Best Western in Soledad to reserve my own overnight reservations before I head up to the park. Plan to arrive between 9:30 - 10:00 am. Bring food for lunches as town is 45 minutes away. Take Hwy 101 South past Salinas to Soledad. Go East on 146 to the west entrance. FEE at entry gate. Rangers Office can provide maps and info at the entry. Meet at far end of parking lot. Attention: As of January 1, 2007, a new series of passes will be sold. Older ones may still be valid, but are being discontinued. Check this website for more details.

April 16, Los Alamitos Creek, Almaden Valley.
A recent site we enjoyed with tree-lined creek and view of mountains. Go South on Almaden Expressway and just before it ends you will park on the left side, before the bridge.

April 23, Santa Teresa Park.
Green California Hills with sweeping views of two mountain ranges. Take 85 East to Bernal Rd. Go West to top of hill and turn left into the park. Proceed to Pueblo Group Picnic Area. $5 park fee.

April 30, Palm Haven District, Willow Glen area of San Jose.
Step back in time with vintage homes and stately palm trees. A Hollywood-styled neighborhood right out of the 1920s. From Hwy 17 take Hwy 280 East to Bird Avenue exit. Turn right onto Bird Avenue, right on Coe Avenue. Take Coe Avenue to Plaza Drive and turn right. Palm Haven Avenue is first turn on right.

March 5, Water District Headquarters, South San Jose.
A small site, but one I never tire of painting. The easy walking path around the percolation ponds offer mountain vistas, intimate demonstration landscape near the building, beautiful lake setting and plenty of shade. Take a few minutes to stroll around the lake and you will understand why I return here. From Los Gatos take Hwy 85 East. Take Almaden Road exit. Turn right on Almaden Road and head south. Pass Blossom Hill Road then look for Via Monte Drive. Turn left into parking lot. Turn left in the lot once again to park.

March 12, Santa Teresa Boulevard/Laguna Road, Morgan Hill.
Views are great with farm and ranch setting, cows, golden hills and green row crops. Take Hwy 85 East to Bernal Road Exit. Go south on Bernal Road. Turn left at Santa Teresa Boulevard. Travel south and past Bailey Avenue to Laguna Avenue. Meet on the corner of Santa Teresa Boulevard and Laguna Avenue. If you come later, go either way on Laguna because it dead ends in both directions. We will be easy to find. Please note: Parking is tough and lacks restrooms.

March 19, Ellenwood Avenue/Alexander Court, Los Gatos.
Little triangular park with classic homes and landscaping. Take Nicholson west off of Santa Cruz Avenue and head up hill to Ellenwood and Alexander. Meet at corner.

March 26, Almaden Lake Park. South San Jose.
Great lake setting with mountains forming a backdrop. Take Almaden Expressway south. Past Coleman Avenue look for Winfield Boulevard. Turn right to park entrance parking lot.

Rugged rock peak with unspoiled California hills all around. Also treelined creek setting. Allow one hour drive time to destination. Go South on 101 past Gilroy. Go toward Hollister, east on 25 and left on McCloskey Rd. Take McCloskey to end and go left to Lone Tree Rd. Go right and continue up the hill until you cross bridge and see peak on right. MONDAY, JANUARY 9th PALMHAVEN DISTRICT WILLOWGLEN 9am/12noon
This site steps back in time with vintage homes and stately palm trees. This neighborhood comes right out of Hollywood in the 1920's. Great homes surrounding a neighborhood park. From 17 take 280 east and go right on Bird Ave and then right on Coe and right on Plaza. Meet on corner of Plaza Dr. and Palmhaven.

MONDAY, JANUARY 16TH WATER DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS, SANJOSE 9am/12noon
A small site but one I never tire of. These Percolation Ponds offer Mt views, beautiful lake setting and plenty of shade. If you take the FEW minutes to hike around the lake you will find lots to paint. From Los Gatos take 85 east and go right on Almeden Road. Once you pass Blossom Hill Rd look for Via Monte and go left into Parking lot. Go left, once in the parking lot, and look for my green Truck with the cone on top.

MONDAY, JANUARY 23 ARASTRADERO PRESERVE, PALO ALTO 10am/1pm
California Hills and a small, wooded lake setting nearby. Take 280 north to Page Mill Road. Go left on Page Mill Road, and right on Arastradero. Go about a half a mile to the preserve parking lot on right.

MONDAY, JANUARY 30 SANTA TERESA BLVD./LAGUNA ROAD SOUTH SAN JOSE 9am/12noon
Farm and ranch settings and cows, golden hills and green row crops with variety of trees. Meet on the corner of Santa Teresa Blvd and Laguna Rd. Take 85 east to Bernal Rd. go west to Santa Teresa. Go south past Bailey Rd. to Laguna Rd. Meet on corner. If you come later go either way on Laguna because it dead ends in both direction and we will be easy to find. Parking is tough and no restrooms but views are great.

      Varied water ways, colorful landscape and waterfowl. Great for the artist and  the photographer. We meet in the parking lot at Moss Landing by 9;45 and then on to our paint site. Good eating places and some galleries nearby. Take Highway 1 south past Watsonville to Moss Landing. Go right on  Moss Landing Road. Take the next right on Sandhodlt Road. Just before bridge go right into parking lot and meet there.

Meet in parking area.

NOVEMBER 22 VILLA MONTALVO Saratoga 9am/12noon
Formal gardens and fall landscape. Meet in parking lot #3 just past the Mansion on the left.

NOVEMBER 29 PINNACLES NATIONAL MONUMENT EAST OF SOLEDAD 9am on
From the parking lot of the west entrance you can paint in 4 directions and a short walk will get you even greater views. Hike through caves nearby. This park is unique and reminds me of the badlands of south eastern Montana or Utah. Small entry fee. No food nearby so bring a lunch and water, If your a photographer heres your chance for great pictures. Dress in layers and keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day. I painted four 12x16 on a sunny fall day last year and look forward to painting there again. Take 101 south to Soledad, go east on 146 to park west entrance. Allow 1 1/2 hours for travel and check with Nick about car pools.

Once grand estate of Senator Phalen, Villa Montalvo offers a lovely Mansion surrounded by formal gardens. Take Montalvo Road off Saratoga Los Gatos Road and follow it around to the end. Meet in parking lot #3 to left of Mansion.

OCTOBER 11th. SANTA CLARA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT                    
HEADQUATERS, SAN JOSE  9am/12noon
Tree lined lake with view of mountains. This personal favorite is on Almeden Road Just south of Blossom Hill Road. Turn left at Via Monte into parking lot. The address is 5750 Almeden Road

OCTOBER 18th. RAY'S RANCH, LOS GATOS 9am/12noon

Go right and meet in beach access parking lot, just past Mobile home park, on left. Dress warm, food and galleries in nearby. Half Moon Bay.

We have been invited to paint "JAZZ on the PLAZZ" 10 Wed. evenings starting July 7th --- Sept. 8th, 6;30 -8;30. arrive at 6 p.m. and set up. The jazz music is great and the people are friendly. This event is in Los Gatos Town Plaza on the corner of E. Main and Santa Cruz Ave. We had a good time last year and look forward to more of the same.

Fort Baker on the Marin side of the Golden Gate Bridge has loads of interesting views including the bridge, harbor and white barracks with red roofs set against golden Calif. hills. Take first exit past Vista point and a left down to Ft. Baker Look for my truck at bottom of hill. After painting have lunch in nearby Sausilito and check out the Galleries. Mon. May 10th.   STANFORD MEMORIAL CHURCH/MAIN QUAD Palo Alto 9am/12noon
I worked 3 years on Sanford Campus and it's loaded with historical buildings and great landscape. Take 280 north to Page Mill Rd. Go east to Junipero Serra Blvd. Go north to Campus Drive East and follow around to the corner of Roth Way and Campus Drive. Take a left on Roth Way and meet in the 3 story parking garage on the left. Look for the green truck with red cone on top.

Mon May 17th.   MOSS LANDING   9am/12noon
Many interesting bldgs, boats and wetlands. Take Highway 1 south past Watsonville to Moss Landing. Turn right at power plant onto Moss Landing Road. Take the next right on Sandholdt Road. Before Bridge turn right into parking lot.

From beach, view of Pt. Lobos, Carmel and a Carmelite Mission across Hiway 1. This is the first beach as you head south on Hiway 1, just past Carmel, Meet at beach entry, park along hiway 1. Paint in the morning and after lunch hit the galleries. Bring a friend and make a day of it!

This grand estate offers quiet peaceful painting. Take Montalvo Rd. off Saratoga/Los Gatos Rd. and follow it to the end. Meet in parking lot #3, to the left of the Mansion.

Nov. 24th - Santa Clara Valley District Headquarters. 9am to 12noon.
Close in favorite with tree lined lake and view of the mountains. From Los Gatos take 85 east to Almeden Road. Go South past Blossom Hill Rd. and turn left at Via Monte into the parking lot. The address is 5750 Almeden Rd.

Sept. 15th MOSS LANDING HARBOR. Hiway One 9am
Working fishing harbor, old and new boats and interesting old buildings. Good eating places so bring a friend and make a day of it. Take 17 south to Watsonville exit. Go South past Watsonville and turn right at power plant onto Moss Landing Rd. Take the next right on Sandholdt Rd. Before bridge turn right into Moss Landing Harbor Parking lot. Those wishing to carpool meet at Neighborhood Center at 7;30 am to leave by 7;45 am.

Sept. 22nd VASONA (AT DAM) Los Gatos 9am to 12noon
Lake setting looking back at mountains. Take 17 to Lark and go west to Garden Hill Rd. GO left and follow around to Dam entrance. Park in neighborhood.

JULY 2003:

It's July And the weather couldn't be better. The summer encouragees lots of shade so the more the merrier. We're looking for more sites, suggestions welcome. Lgaaa artist Noreen Christopher hosted us at her home last time - thanks Noreen! She's been using a good mix of mediums with oils and water-mediums leading the way. The Staffords are using wc pencils; Tonya Carpenter showed up with a camera. Look for more sites on lgaa webpage, in the palette and regulary scheduled meetings. Check out what's happening in northern ca (by checking the "plein aire scene" mag at plein air table. It shows plein aire sites in Nca sites and CA artists.

Nick's Notes - "The digital camera has helped not me only frame a scenes but to capture people who move in and out your scene to be inserted later in your painting. This is also a good way to freeze shadow and light as a painting aid.
